What should I bring?
Just your fabulous self! We provide everything you need, including:
-
Mahjong sets
-
Loaner NMJL cards
-
All learning materials (pens, notepads, and guides)
-
Your choice of beverage in a lidded cup, if you prefer something other than the offered drinks.
-
If you already own the NMJL card, you are welcome to bring it, but there is no need to purchase anything in advance.
How many classes should I take?
For the best experience, we strongly recommend two lessons, followed by regular play.
-
Lesson 1: Intro to Mahjong – introduction for brand-new players
-
Lesson 2 – guided practice playing games
Many students feel that the game really "gels" during Lesson 2. Confidence is built when you join our mahjong community and play with other players. Everyone learns at a different pace -- we are happy to assist you further in your mahjong education. Practice is key, whether you play with others or online.
What’s the difference between Lesson 1 and Lesson 2?
-
Lesson 1: Learn the tiles, rules, and the NMJL card. Two games will be played.
-
Lesson 2: Guided play as more rules and etiquette are introduced during games.
-
It is recommended to take both Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 within a week to feel comfortable playing with others and to retain information.
What is your cancellation or reschedule policy?
Our classes are limited to ensure best instruction. Your seat matters!
-
Reschedule requests must be made at least 3 days (72 hours) in advance
-
We cannot accommodate no-shows or last minute changes
-
All tickets are final sale: non-refundable
Thank you for understanding. This policy helps us provide a great experience for everyone at the table. Life happens, we get it. In emergency situations, tickets may be transferred for a different lesson date at our discretion.
I have never played before. Will I be lost?
Lesson 1 is designed specifically for beginners, but Mary does tell her students that their brain may hurt just a little! That's a good thing--it keeps your mind sharp! Keeping lessons light-hearted, we move step-by-step with clear explanations and a keepsake guide. Lessons are led with patience, kindness, and grace as we navigate the nuances of the game. A little humor always helps!
Do you offer private classes or group events?
Absolutely! We host private sessions for friend groups, birthdays, work events, and more. Please note that Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 private classes require a minimum of eight participants. Fill out the form linked above for inquiries about private sessions.
Where can I get an official NMJL card?
We provide loaner NMJL cards at every lesson, but we recommend purchasing a card to continue playing after lessons. Cards are available for purchase at the studio or directly from the National Mah Jongg League. https://nationalmahjonggleague.org/
